Girls Latin School Class of 1969 | Vita Tua Sit Sincera
Founded in 1878, Girls’ Latin School was the first college preparatory school for girls in the United States. From 1955 - 1981, it occupied the yellow brick building on Talbot Avenue in Codman Square, Dorchester. In 1972, Girls’ Latin School and Boston Latin School (Boys’ Latin School) both became coed after a decision on an equal rights for girls lawsuit. The Codman School building became Boston Latin Academy. Both nationally renowned coed “exam” schools continue educating Boston Public Students in a traditional and classical curriculum. In 1981, Boston Latin Academy moved to an Ipswich St. building across from Fenway Park and in 1991, to Townsend St at its present 2019 location.
Many of us attended Girls’ Latin School for six years in grades 7 – 12, and others joined us for four years in grades 9 – 12. In the fall of 2019, the Class of 1969 came together to celebrate its 50-year anniversary since we left the Codman Square yellow brick building and went our separate ways. As we reconnected for our Reunion Weekend, we remembered our GLS Sisters who had sadly passed away. Our “In Memoriam” Girls’ Latin School Plaque in the Boston City Hall Plaza Garden of Hope commemorates all of us of the spirit, perseverance, and friendships made during our years as the members of the Girls’ Latin School Class of 1969.
